The New Deal and Expanding Federal Power: FDR’s Second Bill of Rights

When Franklin D. Roosevelt introduced the Second Bill of Rights (Bill of Economic Rights) during the challenges of the Great Depression era, this was part of his speech:

“Delivering his State of the Union address during his third term as President, FDR said, ‘People who are hungry and out of a job are the stuff of which dictatorships are made.'”

Three of the eight rights that were implemented that are not being successfully upheld today due to corporations not contributing back to the country and its middle class through lack of taxation and regulation:

— The right to earn enough to provide adequate food and clothing and recreation;
— The right of every family to a decent home;
— The right to adequate medical care and the opportunity to achieve and enjoy good health;
— The right to adequate medical care and the opportunity to achieve and enjoy good health.”
_____
Our country voted for someone who pushes against the institution because the institution is not working for them. Roosevelt recognized how dictatorships are made, when “Founding documents…proved to be inadequate to assure us equality,” and pinpointed issues that the middle class is struggling with the most today.

We should heed what history teaches us and re-examine whether the Second Bill of Rights are being honored.
